CBD - How It Works
CBD – How It Works
Everyday, more and more research is done to learn about how CBD actually interacts with our bodies and benefits us in so many ways. While it is still ongoing, there are a few answers we have and you can find them here. Information on this post is compiled from a number of research-backed articles from Project CBD, G3 Global Biosciences, and CBD Oil Review.
With the CBD industry being so young, a lot of people do not know just how natural it is for our bodies to process all the different cannabinoids. In fact, our bodies even produce their own certain cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors. The two main cannabinoid receptors found in the body are CB1 and CB2 receptors, and THC mostly binds to these receptors for its therapeutic effects. While CBD is known to have several indirect effects with these receptors, it does not attach directly to either. Instead, it seems to direct the body to use more of its own cannabinoids and other non-cannabinoid receptors.
Although CBD has little binding affinity for either of the two cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), cannabidiol modulates several non-cannabinoid receptors and ion channels. CBD also acts through various receptor-independent pathways—for example, by delaying the deterioration of endogenous cannabinoids or neurotransmitters (such as anandamide and adenosine) and by enhancing or inhibiting the binding action of certain G-protein coupled receptors.
These receptors include:
- Enhancing Serotonin receptors for anxiety, addiction, appetite, sleep, pain perception, nausea and vomiting.
- Enhancing Vanilloid Receptors for pain perception, inflammation and body temperature.
- Inhibiting GPR55 or orphan receptors to modulate blood pressure and decrease bone resorption and cancer cell proliferation.
- Activating PPAR or nuclear receptors to induce tumor regression, degrade a molecule linked to Alzheimer’s disease, and regulate genes that are involved in energy homeostasis, lipid uptake, insulin sensitivity, and other metabolic functions benefitting diabetic patients.
The main method that CBD uses to regulate our body is by interacting with the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is a physiological system that controls and cares for your health. Endocannabinoids and its receptors can be found throughout the body, in the brain, organs, glands, and connective tissues. This system is actually responsible for helping maintain many of our bodily functions. It plays a crucial role from our immune system to our nervous system and because endocannabinoids are often found at intersections of our bodies’ various systems, it ultimately acts as a bridge between the body and the mind. When introduced into the endocannabinoid system, CBD causes an increased release of 2-AG, one of the body’s endogenous cannabinoids. Like CBD, 2-AG stimulates both CB1 and CB2 receptors, which enhances the overall effect on the body.
The endocannabinoid system's purpose is to respond to endogenous cannabinoids produced within the human body. However, it also responds and recognizes cannabinoids from external sources including the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol or CBD. Thanks to this discovery, scientists have quite a lot of research to complete that will ultimately lead to CBD being a regulator for so many bodily functions.
HOW CBD EFFECTS YOUR ECS
By stimulating the endocannabinoid system, CBD promotes homeostasis, reduces pain sensation and decreases inflammation. CBD works to nourish and balance the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors in the brain, central nervous system, and peripheral nervous system. When the ECS isn’t functioning properly, your body can experience several chemical imbalances. This is where phytocannabinoid rich cannabidiol comes in. CBD acts quickly to increase ECS function, promoting balance and overall health. A rapidly growing body of research supports cannabidiol’s ability to provide a number of health benefits and reduce symptoms.
